A salute to student volunteers

One of the many things that make Women In Need so great is the dedicated group of women and men who volunteer their time. These people are an integral part of what we do and we are so grateful that they share their talents with us each day.

The face of volunteerism has changed greatly over the past 20 years, and no one knows this better than our very own Volunteer Coordinator, Michelle Young. Michelle has worked as a Volunteer Coordinator for over 23 years, and has seen many faces come and go in her time here. She attributes the shift in part to the changing workforce. With more women in full time jobs and a greater focus on family and self, there are fewer people with time to dedicate to volunteering. This also means there is greater competition between organizations seeking volunteers.

Students have proven to be a fantastic resource for WIN, helping to fill the growing volunteer void. Many high schools have a community service requirement, and we happily supply students with hours in exchange for their helping hands.

Anna is one of our many talented high school student volunteers. Earlier this week, she helped create the “Designer Colourless” display at our Pandora location which has been very well received. Anna spends four hours a week with us, providing support across the store. Her creative eye, attention to detail and flexibility are a great addition to the team.

WIN also takes on volunteers from UVic’s English Language Centre’s Continuing Studies program. Participants from across the globe, including Japan, Turkey, and Korea, assist for 20 hours a week. We are proud to have this wonderful diversity in our organization and appreciate the incredible range of skills that each student has to offer.

Volunteers are crucial to the success of Women In Need. “The more volunteers we have, the more dollars go towards our programs, and the more we can do for the community,” Michelle explains.

From the bottom of our heart, we thank our volunteers for their efforts! If you know someone looking for a rewarding volunteer experience with a caring and fun-loving group, we would love to hear from you!
