We celebrate our successes at waste reduction for Waste Reduction Week
Waste Reduction Week has us thinking about our continued efforts to reduce waste as an organization.
As a non-profit cooperative dedicated to supporting women along their journey between crisis, financial self sufficiency and wellness, we are deeply aware of the importance of a healthy and sustainable environment in which to build empowered lives. This is why we decided to take an active role in protecting our environment both in terms of a reduced carbon footprint, and by creating ways to increase opportunities for the re-use of goods in Victoria. Operationally, we have looked for creative and committed ways to recycle as much as possible, using our trash bin as a last resort. Our diversion of usable goods from the landfill equates to a diversion of 732 tonnes of CO2 equivalent each year.
We have been able to reduce waste from the landfill thanks to the commitment of all the people related to WIN. This includes our staff and volunteers, the engagement of our donors and customers and our partnerships with other community organizations. Through our partnerships with FrogBox, DL Bins, Ellice Recycling and BC Hazmat we have been able to achieve amazing goals in waste reduction and keep our costs down while doing it. Sometimes things aren’t suitable for our programs and don’t sell in our stores. Many of these items are still useful and get collected from us by the Compassionate Resource Warehouse and shipped to organizations around the world.
We are glad to be part of a community effort to reduce waste and live in a beautiful and flourishing environment.
